Invert

Stills Centre for Photography | 2019

Invert was a group exhibition developed through Stills School, an alternative, free photography programme at Stills Centre for Photography, founded by Claire Cochrane with tuition by Morwenna Kearsley. Stills School offers an accessible and innovative model of art education, delivered through short courses including Contact (8 weekly sessions) and Academy (15 weekly sessions), supporting emerging artists who face barriers to traditional arts education.

This exhibition marked McLachlan’s first experience of accessible, values-led art education, alongside the first public presentation of her ongoing photographic series Mōtae.

Motae installed at Stills as part of Invert. The grid of 165 six by four portrait colour photographs from the series. The photographs show McLachlan’s body in the reflection of paintings; The grid is aimed to evoke a sense of movement, like film stills and create an immersive experience of looking.

Invert brought together four Stills School graduates whose practices explore the act of making work within challenging spaces - whether the body, environment, emotional state, or location. Rather than presenting these challenges as limitations, the exhibition foregrounded how each artist inverted them into tools for creative production.
