NOTES Journal - Letters to Photography
Issue 7 | Spring/Summer 2020
Mōtae was featured in NOTES: Letters to Photography Issue 7, an artist-led Scottish periodical devoted to developing visual and critical discourses in contemporary photography.
Issue 7 centres on “the politics of the body itself,” exploring how photographic practices engage with identity, performativity, resistance, and embodiment within both private and public spaces.
Mōtae is described as capturing “resistance in a hospital room with muted colors and a soft focus on her activated limbs.” Made during periods of extended illness, the work transforms what the editors describe as “the chasm between health and illness into a stage for movement and recovery.”
As the editors write, the issue as a whole forms “a voyage of bodily resistance, rights, and memories,” examining how artists render “the physical relationships of the body to its surroundings - private or public - and always in a sense political.”
Issue 7 features work by:
Elina Brotherus
Joel Dixon
VALIE EXPORT
Mayane Soret
Sekai Machache
Patricia Almer
Katy Hundertmark
Scott Caruth
Louise McLachlan
